We visited Submarine Force Museum, located on the Thames River in Groton, Connecticut after Essex steam train ride. It was just 30 minutes drive from Essex. It was easy and close. This museum is located next to Naval Submarine Base New London. The admission and parking were free, but I donated small dollars. There is a lot of exhibitions in museum and the best one was a Historic Ship NAUTILUS. This was the world’s first nuclear powered ship. And the Navy decommissioned NAUTILUS in March 1980. We could walk around inside the NAUTILUS, but we couldn't see nuclear power engine. They provide voice announced machines in Japanese available in NAUTILUS. That helped us understanding about life style in submarine.

In the photo above, this submarine was explained the Japanese "Type A" on museum web site.
This submarines were used during the attack on Pearl Harbor, but were generally unsuccessful.
