Last Saturday, I visited the Samegai Trout Farm operated by the government of Shiga Prefecture in Maibara with my wife and friend. Now, it is the rainy season in Kansai, but it was a fine and hot day. Samegai was a nice place to visit, because it was really cooler than Kusatsu where we live. We learned a lot about freshwater trout. In addition, we enjoyed a lunch of broiled trout with salt, raw fish and trout eggs from Biwa trout (Oncorhynchus masou rhodurus). This fish, native to Lake Biwa, is very rare and delicious. Samegai Trout Farm tries to raise and research them. I’ve eaten both wild and farmed fish and I love them both. I hope to visit and enjoy a Biwa trout again someday.
