We took a ski trip to Yamagata prefecture last weekend. I know it’s already May, however you can still enjoy skiing on natural snow in Yamagata. So, we went to Gassan ski resort, located west of Yamagata city. This ski resort is very unique, because it’s closed during winter due to super heavy snow. In winter, there is a lot of snow around 10 meters deep. So, it’s too much to remove the snow there. In late March, they start to remove the snow on the road. The ski resort usually opens around the middle of April and you can enjoy skiing until late July.
There is a chair lift and two surface lifts, which we call “rope tow” at the Gassan ski resort. They don’t groom the snow on the slopes, so it’s natural with many bumps or some smooth areas. We’re expert skiers and enjoyed skiing the bumps. At Gassan mountain, you can enjoy amazing landscapes, because there is a lot of beautiful spring foliage, but the mountains are still covered with snow.
Our ski season has just finished last weekend. We enjoyed skiing without any problems, so we appreciate everything. Next season, we want to go skiing not only, the Nagano area, but also Hokkaido, Tohoku area and some foreign countries.
